Bele Chere, a midsummer Asheville event, is widely bruited as one of the largest street festivals in the southeastern United States. Sponsored by the Asheville Department of Parks and Recreation, each July the event attracts over 350,000 people each summer to the green mountains of the Southern Appalachians. Cool temperatures and a hip downtown "quasi-urban" Asheville scene coupled with sapid food, preeminent entertainment, and a wholesome dram of NC mountain arts and crafts are tossed together to make Bele Chere a festival-goer´s dream in reality.
Music acts over the twelvemonths have included John Mayall, Blues Traveler, North Mississippi All-Stars, Widespread Panic, Allison Kraus, Travis Tritt, Dark Star Orchestra, Marty Stuart, The Gin Blossoms, and Dolly Parton. Each year attendees are treated to a wide range of musical talents in the various genres of bluegrass, hip-hop, reggae, country, blues and rock. Most music events are free and open to the public.
Food vendors come from close and far with extolled samplings such as thai chicken with peanut sauce, veggie burritos, and cajun red beans & rice with sausage. Beer and wine trucks are placed strategically around town so one never has to walk far for a cold one. Snow cones, cotton candy, and other traditional fair are no surprise and always within sight during Bele Chere. If you need a break from the action, there are plenty of cafes in downtown Asheville for the much needed refreshment.
Strolling along near the sidewalk you will find handmade dulcimers, blown glass art, and prints from local artists. A certain color of red at a NC mountain potter´s booth may catch your eye while you are checking out the downtown real estate condos where folks are taking in the sights from their balconies.
