Folkmoot USA, the elocution and vision of Waynesville resident Dr. Clinton Border, became a reality in 1984 when his eleven year quest to showcase and preserve the traditions and heritages of all of the world's cultures while presenting southern Appalachian culture in the process. Inspired in 1973 while accompanying a western NC square dance team performed in the Sidmouth, England, Borders event has mushroomed into North Carolina's International Folk Festival.
This Asheville area event is well known for the electic mix of visual and auditory sensations. Many a frequent flyer mile would be racked up if one globetrotted to view this oustanding menagarie of performers. At the festival, partygoers have watched the Forrester's Cape Breton Scottish Dance Company, El Cimmaron an Argentine dance team, and the lengendary folk musician from Deep Gap, North Carolina - Mr. Doc Watson. Over the course of several weeks a plethora of acts ebb and flow across the stage. Don't miss the Parade of Nations, a festival highlight
After 25 years, Folkmoot (borrowed from Old English meaning ":meeting of the people") has seen over 200 acts and performers from more than 100 nations. Keenly aware of the policy of Folkmoot, organizers do not allow any repeat performers. They are always on the lookout for new local and abroad talent.
